Since Roger Billings (aka "hydrogen man"; Rose 1982 and "Dr. Hydrogen"; Time magazine 2003) built the very first hydrogen car back in 1965, hydrogen automotives have come a long way. You can simply walk into a store and buy a BMW Hydrogen 7, Mercedes-Benz F cell, GM Hy-wire, Mazda RX-8, or an H2Hummer as you please. As mentioned above, hydrogen already powers buses in Iceland, and whole cities in Japan and Denmark. The American Hydrogen Association predicts hydrogen  to be THE energy source of the future. Hydrogen is an exremely eco-friendly gas and is able to produce tons of energy. At the 2008 Shell Eco-Marathon(TM) Americas, a competition for fuel-efficient prototype vehicles, Penn State's HFV Team from University Park, achieved a staggering 1,668.3 mpg (709.1 kilometers per liter) in their hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. So there is no doubt about the potential of hydrogen as an energy source. However hydrogen cars are still very expensive (~US$100,000) and hydrogen fuel stations are limited to certain parts of USA and thus the average person is not able to make use of this technology yet.

 

However, recently scientists have created a "conversion kit" thanks to an age-old patented technology that had gone under the radars (or forced to stay under the radars). This kit makes it possible for regular cars, vans, SUVs, or even trucks, both petrol and diesel, to be converted to run on hydrogen.

The principal behind HOD in a few sentences would be roughly like this: Distilled water is subjected to electrolysis (lysis or breakdown by a small electric current) using positive and negative electrodes. Water, which is made out of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom is broken down back to hydrogen and oxygen by the electrolytic process. The resultant gaseous product will have a combination of HHO (aka oxyhydrogen or Brown's gas - named after it's founder, Professor Yull Brown), oxygen (this is why you will be producing oxygen while you drive), orthohydrogen and parahydrogen. This combination is three times  more potent than regular gasoline and bingo here's why your gas mileage rockets up faster than gas prices.T

There is a similar gas produced from waste products, which has been patented and trademarked MagneGas by it's founder Dr. Santilli. The behaviour of MagneGas and HHO are believed to follow the same principals. Dr. Santilli calls the molecules that make up MagneGas, magnecules. During electrolysis, the ground state configuration of the molecule is altered such that it becomes a gas. Dr. Santilli calls these energized molecules, magnecules. When the HHO reverts back to the ground state configuration, there is a microburst acceleration during which energy is gained in larged amounts from the static field. Japan unveils water-fuel car

According to the newscaster,there is a generator inside the car that generates hydrogen from water. But this is different from the Hydrogen on Demand cars that we talk about because this car runs entirely on water. If you can get your hands on one, do so by all means, but they're not available in the market yet. But if you had any doubts about the ability of extracting hydrogen from water, you would have surely cleared them after watching the video below.

The new car, now in pre-production, is called the “Scorpion,” and the Company plans for it to be available to consumers this fall. The hydrogen delivery system with dual computer processor controls produces hydrogen on demand, and in real time, which will be inducted through the air intake manifold and blended with gasoline at a ratio of 30-40 percent hydrogen, according to Maxwell. The fuel for this system is derived from fracturing water molecules drawn from a small on board water tank, and will not require a high pressure, on board hydrogen storage tank or hydrogen fueling station."
